Visit the park

Here you’ll find directions, information about local services, and other useful details to help you prepare for your visit to Abisko National Park.

Many visitors take the train to Abisko National Park. Naturum Abisko and the Swedish Tourist Association’s mountain station are located about 800 metres from the Abisko Turist train station and are good starting points for a visit to the national park.

Seasons in Abisko National Park

Abisko National Park has something to offer all year round. Abisko has an annual average precipitation of only 300 millimetres, which means that it is often sunny here.

In early autumn, the mountain birch forest “burns” with autumn colours, the mosquitoes are gone and the air is often fresh and cool.

In late autumn and winter, many people come to experience the northern lights, the polar night, snow and cold. Ice‑skating on Torneträsk when the ice forms around December is a spectacular adventure.

In late winter, it is snowshoes or skiing that apply.

In summer, you can make both long and short trips. The birdlife and the abundance of flowers are at their best then. Water levels in the streams can be high in early summer.

At certain times of the year, for example from early May to early June and in October, there are fewer activities in the park and several facilities in the area are closed. This gives the nature in the area a chance to rest and recover.

Accessibility

Naturum Abisko is accessible from the car park at naturum for visitors using, for example, a wheelchair.

There are also accessibility‑adapted trails, for example a trail leading to the canyon and the national park symbol. There is also a rest area here.

Down by the shore of Torneträsk there is an accessibility‑adapted rest area. You can reach it by car if you have special permission.
