About Haparanda Skärgård National Park

Haparanda Skärgård National Park is located in the archipelago of Norrbotten, close to the Finnish border, and consists of several islands in the Bothnian Bay.

There are many excursion destinations in the archipelago and along the coast. Here you will find long bathing beaches, good berry‑picking areas, old fishing sites, cabins and holiday houses.

The largest island in the national park is called Sandskär, and it is a popular island to visit. It has varied nature and an interesting history with seal hunters and shipwrecked sailors.

Sandskär is best known for its long sandy beaches and impressive sand formations. But there are also primeval forests of gnarled pines, flowering coastal meadows, dry juniper heaths and lush birch groves. Here, species from the forest meet the plants and animals of the archipelago and the sea.

On the island of Sandskär in Haparanda Skärgård National Park, more than 250 different bird species have been recorded.
