About Kosterhavet National Park

Explore a rich underwater world filled with football sponges, brachiopods and sea whips. Here, you’ll find reefs of cold‑water corals that provide habitats for hundreds of animal species. Dive or snorkel among kelp forests and seagrass meadows and discover a vibrant underwater life.

Kosterhavet National Park is Sweden’s first marine national park and consists mainly of water and underwater environments.

Below the surface you will find all the typical species of the west coast, plus a large number of species whose largest or only known occurrence is found here. Many of the rare and unique species are found in the deep trench Kosterfjorden, Kosterrännan. It runs through the national park from north to south and reaches a maximum depth of 247 metres.

Kosterrännan is connected to the deep areas of the Skagerrak, which continue all the way out to the continental slopes of the North Atlantic. From there, oceanic water with high salinity and low temperature is carried into Kosterfjorden. This makes it possible for many deep‑sea animals to live here, very close to the coast.

Kosterhavet is Sweden’s first marine national park.
