About Muddus/Muttos National Park

Muddus – Muttos in Sámi – is Sweden’s largest forest national park. Here, you’ll find nature untouched by forestry. The ancient forest is preserved with giant pines, vast mosaics of mires, waterfalls and deep ravines.

In Muddus/Muttos National Park, you can experience the silence of the forest and a fascinating cultural landscape. Here you can hike through old‑growth forests and mire landscapes with myrholmar and myrsjöar. There is also more dramatic nature, such as steep rock ravines and the 42‑metre‑high Muddusfallet/Muttosagahtjaldak. In the southern part of the national park, the Muttosälven river flows into Stora Luleälv.

When you walk along the paths, you can see subtle traces in the trees left by the people who lived in this area before us. They marked their routes by cutting marks into the trees, and they took bark from the pines. In the ground, you can see the foundations of the homesteads that stood here about 100 years ago.

One of the quietest places in Sweden

Muddus/Muttos National Park is one of the quietest places in Sweden, as well as one of the few roadless forest areas in the country. Researchers who have measured sound levels have shown that this and similar forest areas are quieter than other types of natural environments.

Muddus/Muttos National Park is part of the Laponia World Heritage Site.
