After winter, the landscape fills with colour again as fresh greenery spreads and flowers and trees awaken. Although spring arrives at different times across our 31 national parks, you can still sense the season wherever you go – in the birdsong, the rustling leaves and the rapid growth in woodlands and meadows.
Several national parks are known for their spectacular spring flowers and are well worth a visit during spring and early summer.
Dalby Söderskog National Park
Dalby Söderskog is Sweden’s smallest national park by area, at 36 hectares. The park lies in the municipality of Lund, and here on the fertile plains of Skåne the spring flowering is something truly special. When the trees are still bare and the light reaches the ground, vitsippa, gulsippa, vårlök and svalört bloom throughout the area. At this time of year, hålnunneört is also in bloom — the park’s characteristic flower, which thrives particularly well in the southern parts of the park.
Garphyttan National Park
In spring, blåsippa, vitsippa, gullviva and liljekonvalj bloom in the deciduous woodlands of Garphyttan National Park. The air is filled with the scent of the flowering meadows and the intense birdsong of the thrushes that thrive in the park.
The national park lies just outside the village of Garphyttan in Örebro Municipality and is one of Sweden’s oldest national parks. Here, the nature and the remaining open farmland are cared for according to long‑standing traditional practices.
Ängsö National Park
Ängsö is one of Sweden’s oldest national parks. It lies in the northern Stockholm archipelago, in the heart of Roslagen, and is known for its spectacular spring flowers. During spring and early summer, the meadows and pastures on Ängsö are in full bloom with their flowering hay meadows.
In early spring, when the leaves begin to unfold, the ground beneath the deciduous groves is carpeted with blooming vitsippa. From around mid‑May to early June, the orchid Adam och Eva is in flower. At the same time, majviva, ramslök, vårärt and gullviva also appear. During this period, tour boats operate to the island, and it is possible to book a guided tour of the national park.
