Wildlife

Particularly in spring and autumn, hikers have a chance of encountering reindeer in Pieljekaise. Nor is it impossible they will get to see elk.

Predators

There are large predators like bears, wolverines and lynx, but you will need a great deal of luck to catch sight of any of them. Usually they run off without you even knowing that they have been nearby.

Birds

In the mountain heaths there are willow grouse, mountain grouse, golden plovers and Lapland buntings. In spring common snipes, wood sandpipers, redshanks and green shanks nest out on the swampland.

The national park also is home to birds of prey such as white-tailed eagles, golden eagles and gerfalcons.
