New National Parks

There is a long-term plan for which areas can become a national park in the future. In total, there are 10 new areas and three extensions of existing national parks that can complement today's 30 national parks.

The Swedish Parliament and Government are responsible for approving the creation of new national parks and the expansion of existing parks. In partnership with the county administrative boards, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency is responsible for providing supporting information for decisions and for planning the national parks.

Work on a further two areas will begin during the year with the aim of adding to the existing 30 national parks. The two planned areas are:

  • Nämdöskärgården in Stockholm County
  • Bästeträsk on Gotland
